About - The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation limited

Established in 1974, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation Limited (TNFDC) is a state owned Public Sector undertaking with an authorized share capital of Rs 5 crore and paid up share capital of Rs. 4.45 crore. The annual turnover of the corporation is more than Rs 450 Crores The corporation is continuously earning profit from the year 2005-06 onwards through its business activities such as reservoir fisheries management, marketing of fish and fishery products, fish processing, supply of diesel/kerosene to fishermen and ornamental fish culture activities.

The Corporation is continuously paying dividend to the state government from the year 2012-13 and has paid Rs.2.11 crore as dividend for 2017-18 to the state govt. during 2017-18, TNFDC has earned a net profit of Rs.7.05 crores.

TNFDC also owns Chetpet Ecopark at the heart of the Chennai city. It attracts tourists for Boating. It has state of the art Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality rooms where visitors can view and enjoy AR/VR multimedia works.

The corporation has well established network in Marketing of Fish and Fishery products. There is a vast scope for Private investment in the Fisheries sector. Private companies & TNFDC can sign Joint ventures in the field of Fish Processing and Aquaculture.



What we do?

1. Fish Marketing - Fish Stalls, online Sales and Mobile restaurants

TNFDC is marketing fresh fish and sea food through its chain of retail fish stalls and mobile units in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Pollachi, Ooty, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari and Thiruvannamalai.

The Corporation is running 3 modern mobile sea food restaurants at Chennai (Marina and Neelangarai) to serve various sea foods delicious to the customers at an affordable price.

TNFDC is making sincere efforts to create awareness on the positive health aspects of sea food consumption. TNFDC has established an online fish marketing facility called meengal.com on a trial basis to convenience of customers in Chennai. There are plans to expand this facility in other parts of Tamil Nadu. Also Modernising of the TNFDC food Court at Teynampet, Chennai is under progress and expected to be completed soon.

2. Reservoir fisheries management

For efficient management and commercial production and marketing of fresh water fishes, the reservoirs under the control of Department of Fisheries have been transferred to the management of Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation Limited, in more than one phase, on 30 year lease basis. Systematic scientific stocking of fish seeds is being done for sustainable fish production in the following 8 reservoirs which are managed by TNFDC

3. Fish Seed Production

TNFDC is having a total fish seed rearing area of 2.83 hectares at Sathanur, Aliyar, Amaravathy and Palar - Porandalar reservoirs. Quality fish seeds are produced by TNFDC are stocked in the reservoirs managed by TNFDC besides supplying to the fisheries department and private fish farms.

4. Centralized Kitchen

TNFDC is in the process of setting up a Centralized Kitchen with training facilities for Women Self Help group for production and Marketing of Ready to Cook & Ready to Eat fisheries product at Royapuram, Chennai at an estimated cost of Rs. 304.4 lakhs. The aim of this project is to promote sea food consumption among the public and providing self employment opportunities.

5. Chetpet Eco Park

Fisheries Department has established a beautiful Eco - Park with sport fishing facilities at an estimated cost of Rs.42 Crore at the Chetpet Lake which is located at the heart of Chennai city. The Eco - Park has numerous facilities like Boating, Angling, Multi - Level Car Parking (MLCP), Recreation Centre, Food Court, 1.5 KM Walking and Jogging Tracks, Children's Play area, Multimedia, Amphitheatre etc. An Aquarium cum - Aquatic Virtual Reality Centre is being established at a cost of Rs.6 Crores in the Eco-Park.

6. Supply of Subsidised Diesel/Kerosene to Fishermen

TNFDC is operating 31 diesel outlets in the fishing harbours and fish landing centres located all along the coastal area in the state to supply tax exempted high-speed diesel to the motorised traditional and mechanised fishing crafts. Also, TNFDC has 10 outlets in Kanniyakumari District which supplies kerosene to the fishermen for their fishing activities.

7. Production and marketing of ornamental fishes

TNFDC is having ornamental fish production centres at Aliyar and Thirumoorthy Nagar. Various steps to promote the sales of Ornamental fishes are being undertaken.
